Chapter 2: The Word That Stopped Everything

Lily slowly lifted her tear-covered face from Grace’s chest.

She locked her large eyes directly onto mine.

“Daddy…”

The word landed with more force than the hockey stick had.

I stood frozen in the doorway. In three months of Grace working in this house I had never heard the child address anyone that way. She was quiet, watchful, always close to her mother. She had never once reached for me or spoken my name.

Grace raised her head, jaw tight against the pain in her shoulder.

“She’s your daughter, Nathan.”

The kitchen seemed to tilt.

Victoria recovered first, voice rising into the careful, reasonable tone she used when she needed to reassert control.

“She’s lying. The woman is unstable. I found her trying to steal from us and she attacked me when I confronted her. The child is confused—”

“Do not speak,” I said.

The quiet in my voice stopped her.

I crossed the floor, dropped to one knee, and carefully eased Grace’s weight so I could see Lily fully. The little girl was shaking, but she did not look away from me. Her small hand remained fisted in the fabric of Grace’s uniform.

“Is it true?” I asked Grace, still not looking at Victoria.

Grace’s answer was steady despite the pain.

“Yes. She is yours. Your father made certain you would never know. He forced me to leave five years ago. He said if I ever contacted you he would take her from me and destroy whatever life I tried to build. I only came back because I had no other safe place left. I took the job under my middle name so I could stay close enough to protect her without putting her in his reach again.”

Victoria’s breath hitched behind me.

“She’s inventing all of this. Nathan, you cannot seriously—”

I stood, placing myself between Victoria and the two people on the floor.

“You raised a hockey stick against a child,” I said. “You struck the woman shielding her. You spoke about dead people keeping secrets while you prepared to swing again. You will leave this house now. You will take nothing but the clothes you are wearing. If you come within sight of either of them again I will have you removed by force and charged.”

Victoria stared at me as if the words belonged to someone else.

Then the calculated calm she always wore in public cracked, and something colder showed underneath.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting,” she said. “That child ruins everything this family built. Your father understood that. My family understood that. You are about to throw away an empire for a maid’s story.”

I did not answer her.

I waited until she left the kitchen, then called security and instructed them to escort her from the property and revoke every access code she held. Only when the front door closed and the security confirmation came through did I turn back to Grace and Lily.
