Chapter 4: Secure Ground

Security completed Victoria’s removal from the property within twenty minutes of my order.

Every access code, vehicle authorization, and household credential linked to her name was revoked before she reached the front gate. The head of security confirmed that her personal belongings would be inventoried and returned through counsel only. I gave no further instructions regarding her comfort or explanations. The hockey stick remained in evidence bags. The physician’s preliminary reports on Grace’s shoulder and Lily’s condition were already being copied for formal records.

I moved Grace and Lily into the east guest wing myself. The rooms had independent access controls and no overlapping staff schedules with the main house. The physician administered pain management for Grace’s shoulder and arranged for imaging the following morning. Lily refused to leave her mother’s side. She watched every adult who entered the room with the same careful stillness she had shown in the kitchen, only relaxing when Grace’s hand rested on her back.

My attorney arrived before the imaging results. I gave him the sequence in chronological order: the sound of the impact, Victoria standing over Grace with the stick raised, the words about dead people keeping secrets, Lily’s single word to me, and Grace’s statement that the child was mine and that my father had forced her silence five years earlier. He listened without interruption, then requested every employment record related to Grace’s hiring, every communication from Victoria over the past three months, and immediate preservation of the kitchen security footage.

Grace spoke only when asked direct questions. The pain in her shoulder made each breath careful, but her account remained consistent. My father had learned of the pregnancy near the end of her relationship with me. He had presented her with a choice framed as protection: disappear cleanly, accept a private settlement that would keep Lily fed and hidden, or face a custody battle she could not win against the full weight of the Cole legal apparatus and the allied family that would become Victoria’s. She had chosen disappearance. She had returned only when the money and the safe locations ran out, taking the maid position under a middle name so she could remain close enough to watch over Lily without triggering the old threats.

I authorized full legal representation for both Grace and Lily at the firm’s expense, independent of any family trust structures. Victoria’s name was to appear on no document that concerned them. The engagement was terminated in writing that same night. The two-week timeline to the wedding ceased to exist.
