Chapter 15: Disposition

Months later, the formal outcomes settled into their final shape.

The recovery actions continued in the background, largely without my involvement. The assault case resolved through a combination of orders and admissions that required no further testimony from me. The restraining framework remained in place long enough to become irrelevant to daily life. Adrian’s visible fortune was no longer his to command. Celeste’s remaining holdings were a diminished and separate matter.

I did not attend the later hearings. I did not collect clippings. The work of the case had completed its arc when the institutions took over the document trail and the freezes became permanent enough to end any realistic path back to the old structure.

What remained for me was quieter.

I took a short lease in a different city, then a longer one. I returned to professional work under my own name, in rooms where no one monitored my calls or corrected my clothes. The bruises faded. The wedding day became a fixed point rather than a recurring image—a moment when a locked room had finally opened under the pressure of its own records.

Sometimes, late at night, I still thought of the way Adrian’s hand had tightened on mine at the altar and the certainty in his voice when he told me I belonged to him. The memory no longer carried heat. It carried only the residual clarity of a threat that had been met with preparation instead of fear.

He had wanted a wife who knew her place.

He had found a witness who knew how to read a ledger.

In the end, that had been enough to return the stolen ground to the people it had been taken from—and to leave me standing outside the ruins with nothing left that he could claim.
