In the years that followed I received no direct communication from Brandon or his family.

Occasional second-hand fragments reached me through mutual acquaintances and were disregarded. His brothers’ financial needs, his mother’s health, the truck he had once replaced with my savings—none of those obligations returned to my ledger. The support I had given without keeping score had ended the night he struck my mother and offered me the choice between her and the marriage.

I did not monitor his circumstances. The forensic work and the court orders had already established the relevant facts. Curiosity would have been another form of remaining available. I was not available.
