Chapter 3: The Balance

The next morning, at exactly 8:17, Claire called me.
“Elena, open your banking app.”
“Why?”
“Just do it.”
I opened the joint account where Brandon and I had spent years saving what we called “our future.”
Then I froze.
I refreshed the screen.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The balance was just over $1,300.
There should have been nearly $175,000.
“Claire…” My voice came out barely above a whisper. “The money is missing.”
There was a brief silence.
“How much?”
“Almost $170,000.”
My mother looked up from the bed.
Claire’s voice immediately became serious.
“Don’t call Brandon. Take screenshots and download every transaction you can see.”
I stared at the number on my phone, my hands suddenly cold.
Then another thought hit me.
Maybe the $10,500 Brandon had accused my mother of stealing was the least of our problems.
Because someone had been quietly moving almost our entire life savings.
And I still had no idea that the accusation against my mother had been planned long before that night.
I followed Claire’s instructions without argument. Screenshots. Download of available history. Forward everything to her secure address. Do not confront. Do not warn.
The man who had struck my mother twice and offered me an ultimatum about our marriage had also, it appeared, been emptying the account that was supposed to represent our shared future.

The five seconds I had counted in the apartment had only been the beginning.
The real accounting was just starting.
