Chapter 4: After the Water

Security removed Vivienne from the property within minutes of the flooded bathroom.

She was still calling my name when the guards guided her down the service stairs, away from the remaining guests. I did not watch her leave. I carried Leo to the master suite, locked the door, and waited for the private physician who lived on the estate grounds. He arrived quickly, examined the baby under calm light, and confirmed what my hands had already told me: Leo was cold, soaked, and terrified, but uninjured beyond residual stress. No water had entered his lungs. The towel and my jacket had been enough.

I changed him into dry clothes myself. His small fists stayed locked in the fabric of my shirt even after the shivering stopped. The physician recommended quiet observation for the rest of the night and a formal pediatric follow-up in the morning. I agreed. Guests were quietly informed that the evening had ended. The orchestra stopped. Cars began to leave the long driveway.

Only when Leo finally slept against my chest did I open my hand again.

The broken bracelet piece and the gold charm with Elara’s initials rested in my palm, still damp. The box in my study—the one that held the last of her personal things—had not been opened by me in five years. The seal I had placed on it was intact the last time I checked. Which meant someone had opened it without my knowledge, removed this single item, and carried it into the nursery.

Vivienne had smiled while my son screamed in a running bathtub.

She had also been moving through rooms and boxes that did not belong to her long before tonight.

I placed the charm in a sealed envelope, labeled it with the date and time, and locked it in the safe beside the bed. Then I called my attorney and the head of household security. Both arrived before midnight. The flooded bathroom was photographed and sealed. The nursery was examined. Access logs for the study and the private wing were pulled. Vivienne’s personal belongings were inventoried under supervision and removed from the estate by morning.

Leo slept through most of it. I did not.
