Chapter 6: First Boundaries

Within forty-eight hours the temporary legal structure was in place.
An emergency protective order prohibited Vivienne from contact with Leo, from approaching the estate or any secondary residence, and from third-party attempts to obtain information about either of us. Temporary sole custody was formalized without opposition that could survive the documented events of the previous night. My attorney accelerated the dissolution filings. Every joint account, authorization, and household privilege that had once included her name was revoked under formal notice.
Security completed a secondary sweep of the private wing. No additional items from Elara’s belongings were found in Vivienne’s former rooms. The single charm remained the only confirmed removal. Its presence in Leo’s hand on the night of the bathtub incident established that Vivienne had been inside the nursery with it before the water began to run. The timeline mattered. It removed any remaining argument that the events had been spontaneous.
Leo’s follow-up examination showed continued physical stability and gradual reduction in residual distress. I kept his schedule deliberately quiet. No visitors beyond the physician, the attorney, and the head of security. No residual staff who had reported primarily to Vivienne remained in the private wing. The household was reorganized around a single priority: the infant who had been placed in a running bathtub by the woman who claimed to love the life she believed he had stolen.
Vivienne’s counsel issued a formal request for mediation and for the return of personal effects still under inventory. The response was brief. Personal effects not classified as evidence would be returned through counsel. Mediation was declined. Access of any kind was declined. The protective order stood.
I did not revisit the flooded bathroom. I did not reopen Elara’s box beyond the formal inventory already completed. The charm remained in the sealed envelope inside the safe. Its initials were the only message required: Vivienne had crossed into private history long before she crossed into active harm.
The party guests had seen only the final minutes.
The record now contained the water, the smile, the empty crib, the broken seal, and the deliberate removal of a dead woman’s charm into the space where a four-month-old slept.
That record would govern every decision that followed.

Leo slept against my chest in a quiet room that no longer contained the woman who had looked at him and seen only theft.
The perimeter around that room would not reopen.
