Chapter 14: The Final Conversation

Almost a year after I left, Ethan asked to meet.

He sent the request through our lawyers. He said he wanted to talk — not about the house or money, but about everything that had happened between us.

I almost said no.

But something made me agree.

We met at a quiet café downtown. Ethan looked different. He had lost weight. His clothes were simpler. The expensive watch he used to wear was gone.

He sat across from me and didn’t speak for almost a minute.

Finally, he said, “I owe you an apology. A real one.”

I waited.

“I was wrong,” he continued. “About the house. About my family. About you. I thought… I don’t know what I thought. Maybe that because we were married, I was entitled to everything you had. Or maybe I was just scared that I would never be as successful as you, so I tried to take what you built instead of building something myself.”

He looked down at the table.

“I’m sorry, Claire. For all of it.”

I studied him for a long moment.

“I believe you,” I said. “But I also know that apologies don’t erase what happened. You didn’t just hurt me financially. You tried to take away my safety. You brought people into my home without my consent. You lied to me. And you did it all while believing I wouldn’t fight back.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

“I know,” he said. “And I don’t expect you to forgive me. I just wanted you to hear it.”

I stood up.

“I hope you find a way to build something of your own someday,” I said. “Because taking from other people will never be enough.”

Then I walked out of the café without looking back.

That was the last time I saw Ethan.
