Chapter 8: The Family That Stayed Too Long
Ethan’s parents and sister didn’t leave that night.
They had nowhere else to go.
His parents had already sold their house, believing they would be moving into “Ethan’s new place.” Lily had given up her apartment after the divorce, expecting to stay with her brother until she got back on her feet.
Now they were stranded in a massive, empty house with no furniture, no food, and no plan.
Ethan spent most of the night on the phone — first with his lawyer, then with his bank, and finally with several friends, trying to figure out where he and his family could stay.
No one offered.
By morning, the reality of the situation had fully settled in.
There was no furniture.
No beds.
No kitchen supplies.
No Wi-Fi (I had canceled the service that morning).
And no money readily available, because most of their accounts were now frozen or under review.
Ethan’s mother sat on the floor of what used to be the living room, looking around in disbelief.
“This can’t be happening,” she muttered. “We can’t stay here like this.”
Ethan didn’t answer.
He was staring at his phone, refreshing his banking app over and over, watching as access to several accounts was restricted one by one.
Lily sat near the window, arms wrapped around her knees.
She was the first one to speak honestly.
“We should have never come here,” she said quietly. “This was never our house. We all knew that.”
Ethan finally looked up.
“Shut up, Lily.”
But his sister didn’t back down.
“No. You told us this was your house. You said Claire wouldn’t be a problem. You made us believe we had somewhere to live. And now we’re sitting in an empty mansion with no food and no money because you decided to play king of the castle.”
Ethan stood up abruptly.
“I said shut up!”
His voice echoed through the empty rooms.

For the first time, Ethan looked less like the confident man who had declared ownership of my house and more like someone who was beginning to realize he had destroyed his own life.
