Chapter 5: The Return

Ethan stood in the empty entryway, keys still dangling from his fingers.
His mother stopped behind him, one hand gripping her suitcase handle. His father froze on the threshold. Lily stared past Ethan into the bare rooms with growing confusion.
“Where is everything?” his mother asked.
Ethan didn’t answer.
He walked slowly into the kitchen and saw the folder waiting on the island.
For several long seconds, he didn’t move.
Then he opened it.
I watched through the security camera as his expression changed.
The confidence drained from his face. His jaw tightened. His hands gripped the edge of the counter so hard his knuckles turned white.
His mother’s voice carried through the open doorway.
“Ethan? What’s going on? Where are Claire’s things?”
He didn’t answer her.
Instead, he pulled out his phone and called me.
I let it ring.
When it went to voicemail, he tried again.
And again.
Finally, I answered.
“Claire,” he said, his voice tight with barely controlled anger. “What the hell did you do?”
I stood in the parking lot of a hotel twenty minutes away, watching the feed from the driveway camera on my phone.
“I took what belongs to me,” I said calmly. “Just like you said the house belongs to you.”
“You can’t do this,” he snapped. “This is marital property. You can’t just empty the house and leave.”
I smiled, even though he couldn’t see me.
“Check the deed, Ethan. Check the bank records. Check the closing documents. Then tell me again what belongs to you.”
There was a long silence.
When he spoke again, his voice had changed.
“Claire… let’s talk about this. We can work something out.”
“No,” I said. “We can’t. Because you already made your decision. You decided that my home belonged to you and your family. I simply decided that I wasn’t going to live in a house where I was treated like a guest.”
I paused.
“And Ethan? If you try to come after me legally, I have every document ready to show exactly how much of this house was paid for with my money — and how much you stole from our accounts without my permission.”
I ended the call.
Through the camera, I watched Ethan stand alone in the empty kitchen, staring at the folder like it had personally betrayed him.
His mother was still asking questions in the background.

His sister had gone quiet.
And for the first time since I had met him, Ethan Cole looked like a man who finally understood that he had made a very serious mistake.
