Chapter 4: The Safe

We reached Kenneth’s office at Rollins Global Enterprises just after 4:00 a.m.

The building was on night security only. I cleared us through with my executive credentials, the same ones Kenneth had never been able to override because they were tied to the founding family’s control structure, not to his marital status. Justin followed in silence. The rain had stopped, but his jacket still darkened the carpet in small, steady drips as we moved through the executive corridor.

Kenneth’s office faced east. In daylight it looked impressive. At that hour it simply looked expensive and temporary. I went straight to the wall safe behind the false panel of the bookshelf—the one he had always claimed held only passport copies and spare hard drives. I entered the four numbers he had given me under the fluorescent lights of the emergency bay.

The door opened on the first try.

Inside, arranged with the neatness of a man who believed he would never be forced to open it under pressure, were three external drives, a slim folder of printed wire confirmations, a second phone I had never seen, and a sealed medical envelope bearing the name of a private clinic in Arizona. I photographed everything in place before removing a single item. Justin stood behind me and did not speak until I set the medical envelope on the desk.

“What is that?”

“The part I haven’t told you yet,” I said.
