Chapter 8: Kenneth’s Response
Kenneth’s counsel made contact at 5:15 p.m.
The opening posture was predictable: the hospital incident was a private marital matter that had been “escalated through elaborate entrapment”; the safe contents were being mischaracterized; any financial movements were legitimate exploratory discussions he had planned to bring to the board; the medical documents were protected by spousal privilege and irrelevant to corporate governance. The letter requested immediate reinstatement of access, a halt to the “unilateral” investigation, and a private meeting between Kenneth and me to “resolve personal issues without further damage to the company.”
I forwarded the letter to general counsel and to the outside firm already retained by the board. My only instruction was that all communication remain on the formal channel. I would not take his calls. I would not meet him privately. The man who had scheduled a non-consensual procedure under the cover of a routine screening, sold restricted strategy materials, and spent months in my brother’s marriage bed had exhausted any claim to informal resolution.
Justin called that evening. Maya had admitted the affair once confronted with the timelines and the financial transfers into accounts linked to her. She denied knowledge of the corporate theft and the medical procedure. Justin did not sound as if he believed the denial in full, but he was no longer asking me to soften anything for the sake of family optics. The rain from the night before had given way to a hard, clear cold. He said he would file for divorce before the week ended.

Then I sat alone in my office and opened the medical addendum one more time. The clinic’s letterhead. The falsified consent. The permanent clinical effect. Five years of marriage had included the quiet erasure of a choice I had never been allowed to make. The industrial adhesive had exposed the affair. The safe had exposed the rest. Both would be answered through the proper systems.
