Chapter 11: The Last Echoes

Adrian’s final attempts reached me only as reports from counsel. A letter arrived proposing mediation “for the sake of both families’ reputations.” Another suggested that a quiet financial settlement might prevent “unnecessary escalation.” Both were answered with the same short refusal. Celeste’s narrative continued to travel through the social circuit that valued her approvals, but it no longer produced inquiries inside Halcyon or among the vendors I still used. The people who required access to me required it for business. The people who required a softer version of the altar scene were free to keep it. I did not expend effort correcting strangers.

I returned to the operational floors where I had once worked without a title that revealed the trusts. The difference now was simple: I no longer needed to leave the building to become someone else before attending a board session. The two halves of the life closed into one continuous fact. Marcus still drove. The residence overlooking the river remained the only address that received me at the end of the day. The mark on my cheek stayed gone.
