Adrian’s name surfaced only in the most distant social echoes, and then less and less. Celeste’s preferred version of the altar scene continued to exist in the circles that needed it, but it no longer generated inquiries, invitations, or attempts at contact. Counsel retained the recording and the closed file. I never requested the audio again. The memory of the moment required no reinforcement; the perimeter built in the days afterward had done the permanent work.
I moved through the city without the low-level calculation that had once accompanied the engagement—whether a particular dinner would expose the gap between the assistant Adrian believed he was marrying and the stakeholder I actually was, whether a casual question about the company might be fishing for the size of my interest. That calculation had ended on the cathedral steps. In its place was the simpler discipline of a life whose professional and private corridors no longer required a double set of doors.
