Chapter 5: The Narrative War

Celeste proved more efficient than her son. By afternoon a polished version of events was circulating among the families who mattered to the Ellisons: Elena Ward had suffered a crisis of nerves, had misinterpreted a standard marital-planning document, and had embarrassed everyone by leaving the ceremony. The story carefully avoided the word “strike” and replaced it with “a moment of heightened emotion.” It also emphasized my supposed background—foster care, modest employment, limited experience with the expectations of a family like theirs—as quiet evidence that I had never been prepared for the life Adrian offered.

I did not issue a public statement. I did not need to. The board action from the previous night had already placed a formal hold on any transfer involving my registered shares. Finance and legal teams inside Halcyon had begun reviewing every prior inquiry Adrian or his representatives had made regarding my holdings. Those reviews were internal, documented, and sufficient. The people whose opinions actually affected the company now had a paper trail that contradicted the softer story being told at dinner tables.

My father called once. He asked only whether I required additional security at the residence. I said no. Marcus remained the only visible change in my immediate rotation, and even that was understated. I had no interest in performing threat. I had interest in completing the separation with clean edges.
