Chapter 2: The Yellow Envelope

By noon, the house was entirely gutted.
A discreet moving crew had loaded our personal belongings, Noah’s clothes, and my legal archives into an unmarked van. My son held my hand tightly as we walked down the front steps and climbed into the back of a sleek black sedan waiting at the curb.
At the wheel was my attorney and lifelong friend, Evelyn Hart, her expression grim and focused.
"Is Dad coming with us?" Noah asked quietly, looking back at the empty house.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and stroked his soft hair. "Not today, sweetheart. We're going on an adventure to a new home where it's just you and me."
While we drove toward our secure, undisclosed temporary residence, Daniel was finishing his luxury shopping spree across town.
Surveillance footage and store receipts later pieced together his afternoon: after picking up a custom two-carat diamond pendant from Bellamy Jewelers, he treated Vanessa to an expensive lunch at a five-star rooftop restaurant, laughing over champagne while toasting his own cleverness.
At 4:00 PM precisely, Daniel pulled into our driveway, humming a cheerful tune, carrying heavy shopping bags filled with designer boxes.
He unlocked the front door and stepped into the foyer, expecting the usual scent of dinner cooking and the sound of cartoons playing on the television.
Instead, he was met with hollow, echoing silence.
No toys scattered across the hardwood floors. No framed family portraits on the walls. The master bedroom closets were bare, hangers rattling against metal rods in the draft.
Panic flickered across his face. He dropped the shopping bags and sprinted through the lower level.
Then he saw it.
Resting in the exact center of the dining-room table, illuminated by the crystal chandelier, was a thick, unsealed yellow envelope.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Daniel's direct line.
I let it ring twice before answering, keeping my tone ice-cold.
"Where are you?" Daniel shouted over the phone, his voice cracking with sudden, feral panic. I heard the sharp sound of paper tearing in the background as he ripped open the envelope.
"Somewhere safe, Daniel," I replied calmly.
"What the hell is this?!" he roared, his voice bouncing off the empty walls of our former home. "Divorce papers? Freezing injunctions on my business accounts? Are you out of your mind, Claire?!"
"Keep reading," I instructed softly.
"There's... there's a photograph in here," he breathed, the fight suddenly draining out of his voice, replaced by absolute, paralyzing horror.
The photograph inside the envelope showed Daniel and Vanessa leaving a private VIP entrance of an executive hotel, flanked by Marcus Vale—the federal government contractor whose multi-million-dollar bribery investigation was currently dominating the evening news cycle.

"You took the wrong woman for a fool," I whispered into the receiver.
Then, I hung up and blocked his number.
