Chapter 7: The Mistress’s Plea

While I was clearing the rot out of the boardroom, Vanessa Cole was discovering just how cold the world is when you no longer have a corporate credit card to shield you.

My fifty-million-dollar alienation-of-affection lawsuit had successfully attached her bank accounts, her luxury car, and the down payment Daniel had funneled into her penthouse. Worse yet, federal prosecutors had formally named her as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Marcus Vale bribery scheme. She was facing five to ten years in a federal penitentiary unless she could offer the U.S. Attorney something of extraordinary value.

She had nothing left to trade—except Daniel's deepest, darkest secret.

At 4:30 PM on Thursday, my office receptionist buzzed me. "Ms. Vance? There is a woman in the lobby insisting on five minutes of your time. She says her name is Vanessa Cole, and she claims she has information about your son's trust fund."

My jaw tightened at the mention of Noah's name. "Send her in. But have two security officers wait outside the door."

When Vanessa stepped into my executive office, she looked like a shadow of the woman who had once mocked me on a deleted voice message. Her designer coat was wrinkled, her nails were chipped, and her eyes were rimmed with red from sleepless nights.

"Claire," she whispered, standing awkwardly in front of my desk. "Please. Just listen to me before you call security."

"You have three minutes, Vanessa," I said, not offering her a seat. "And if you mention my son's name again without a very good reason, I will have my attorneys expedite the seizure of your mother's home, too."

Vanessa flinched, pulling a small, encrypted USB drive from her pocket and placing it on the edge of my desk.

"Daniel didn't just steal company money," she rushed out, her voice trembling. "He knew the feds might catch on to the Marcus Vale contract eventually. So for the last eighteen months, he’s been skimming off the top of everything—including the medical trust your father set up for Noah’s respiratory care."

The room felt as if the temperature had dropped ten degrees. I stared at the silver drive. "How much?"

"Two million dollars," Vanessa said, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "He converted it into unregistered offshore crypto wallets in Zurich and the Caymans. He told me it was our 'fresh start' fund for after he served a short white-collar sentence."

She pointed a shaking finger at the drive.

"The access keys, the wallet addresses, and the recovery phrases are all on that drive, Claire. Every single cent he stole from your little boy. All I want in exchange... is for you to drop the civil lawsuit so I can afford a defense attorney."

I looked at the drive, then up at the woman who had happily spent money stolen from a sick child's medical fund to buy diamond pendants and vintage champagne.

"Leave the drive," I said coldly. "My forensic team will verify the blockchain ledgers tonight. If the money is there, I will withdraw the civil damages claim."

Vanessa exhaled a ragged breath of relief, nodding repeatedly. "Thank you... thank you, Claire."

"Don't thank me," I said as she turned toward the door. "You're still facing federal charges for wire fraud. I'm not saving you, Vanessa. I'm just letting the government clean up the trash."
