Chapter 4: The Mistress Unravels

Vanessa Cole’s downtown penthouse was a monument to corporate vanity—floor-to-ceiling glass, white leather furniture, and minimalist art that cost more than my first car.

By Friday afternoon, however, the atmosphere inside the penthouse was decidedly less glamorous.

When Vanessa answered her door, she wasn't wearing a designer dress or high heels. She wore an oversized silk bathrobe, her hair unbrushed, her face pale and drawn. She had just spent the morning discovering that her corporate email was locked, her company credit cards were declined at a boutique salon, and her brother’s shell company accounts had been seized by federal marshals.

She froze when she saw me standing in her doorway, accompanied by a private process server holding a thick stack of legal documents.

"Claire?" Vanessa stammered, her hand flying to her throat. "What... what are you doing here?"

"Good afternoon, Vanessa," I said, stepping past her uninvited into the sunlit living room. I took a slow look around the expensive apartment. "Nice place. Did Daniel buy the art with embezzled company funds, or did your brother handle the billing?"

"You can't just barge in here!" Vanessa snapped, her voice rising in defensive panic as she tried to summon her usual corporate arrogance. "I'll call security! I'll call Daniel!"

"Go ahead," I invited smoothly, gesturing to her phone resting on the kitchen island. "Call him. Let's see if he answers. Oh, wait—he can't. His personal cell phone was confiscated by federal investigators two hours ago."

Vanessa’s knees seemed to buckle slightly. She grabbed the edge of the marble island to steady herself. "Federal... investigators? You're lying. Daniel told me you didn't know anything! He said you were a washed-up housewife!"

"Daniel lies a lot, Vanessa. It's sort of his primary skill set," I replied, walking over to the coffee table and picking up a gold-plated Cartier bracelet—the very one he had purchased at Bellamy Jewelers while pretending to be at a 'board meeting.'

I dropped the bracelet back onto the glass with a sharp clink.

"You thought I was safe, didn't you?" I asked, turning my gaze to lock onto hers. "You laughed about me in that voice message. You thought I had nowhere to go, no money, and no power."

"I... I didn't mean..." Vanessa stammered, all her previous venom completely evaporated.

"Here is what is going to happen," I said, stepping close enough that she could smell my perfume. "The process server behind me has just filed an alienation-of-affection civil lawsuit against you for fifty million dollars, attaching every single asset, gift, and bank transfer Daniel gave you over the last six months. Furthermore, the U.S. Attorney's office has subpoenaed your bank records as a co-conspirator in the Marcus Vale bribery ring."

Vanessa stared at me in sheer, unadulterated terror. "Fifty million? I don't have that kind of money! Daniel promised he would take care of me!"

"Daniel can't even take care of himself right now," I said coldly. "He traded his family, his company, and his freedom for a woman who would sell him out to the feds in a heartbeat. Welcome to the consequences of your ambition, Vanessa."

I turned on my heel and walked toward the door, leaving her shaking and sobbing in the center of her expensive, crumbling cage.
