Chapter 3: The Frozen Assets

Within forty-eight hours of Daniel receiving the yellow envelope, the illusion of his untouchable corporate empire began to violently crumble.

I sat in Evelyn Hart’s glass-walled conference office downtown, a steaming cup of black coffee in front of me, watching real-time financial updates flash across my dual monitors.

Evelyn walked in, tossing a thick dossier onto the polished oak table with a satisfied grin.

"Well, Claire, your timing was absolute poetry," Evelyn said, taking a seat opposite me. "The moment Daniel tried to log into his primary business account yesterday morning, he found every single corporate asset frozen by federal and civil injunctions."

"How is he handling it?" I asked, scrolling through a ledger of intercepted corporate emails.

"Not well. He tried to call an emergency board meeting, but his co-directors are already panicking. They discovered that the shell company he set up with Vanessa's brother—Apex Solutions—has been bleeding company funds for six months. The board thinks Daniel embezzled from them, too."

I smiled faintly. "He did. He was so busy trying to build a luxurious slush fund for Vanessa that he didn't realize he was stealing from the very investors who funded his expansion."

"And the Marcus Vale connection?" Evelyn asked, leaning forward. "How deep does that go?"

"Deep enough to put Daniel behind bars for a very long time," I replied, tapping a file labeled Vale Subcontracting Fraud. "Marcus Vale isn't just a government contractor. He’s the target of an active federal corruption probe. Daniel laundered three hundred thousand dollars through Apex Solutions for Vale in exchange for a guaranteed, rigged public-works contract. The physical photographs in that yellow envelope were just a preview. I sent the complete digital audit to the U.S. Attorney's office yesterday morning."

Evelyn whistled softly, shaking her head. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Claire. You didn't just file for divorce; you dropped a tactical nuke on his entire life."

"He thought I had no money, no career, and nowhere to go," I said quietly, closing my laptop. "He forgot that the foundation of Vance Enterprises was built entirely with my father's blood, sweat, and capital. You don't steal an empire from its rightful heir without facing a reckoning."

"What's our next move?" Evelyn asked.

"Daniel is going to try to liquidate his personal assets or hide whatever cash he has left in offshore accounts before the courts lock everything down," I said, standing up and smoothing my jacket. "It’s time to pay a visit to his beloved mistress. Let's see how loyal Vanessa Cole really is when the money runs out."
