Chapter 12: Miriam’s Last Stand
Miriam did not accept the outcome quietly.
She contacted two local lifestyle reporters and attempted to sell a story of a manipulative outsider who had trapped a good family with hidden finances and then destroyed them out of spite. One reporter reached out to Elena for comment. Elena provided the public court records and the basic timeline. The story never ran.
Next Miriam tried the relatives. A series of dramatic phone calls followed, full of warnings that I would come for their assets next, that no one connected to the Vance name was safe. Most of the family, already embarrassed by the revelations, distanced themselves further. A few sent me quiet messages of apology for the years they had watched and said nothing. I did not answer them. Their silence when it had mattered could not be repaired by private regret now.
The final attempt came in the form of a letter delivered to Elena’s office, this one threatening to contest the trust itself on grounds of undue influence and secrecy within a marriage. Elena responded with a short, surgical letter outlining the statute of limitations, the strength of the documentation, and the personal liability Miriam would face if she pursued a frivolous claim.
