Chapter 5: The Unraveling Begins

By the third day the reality of the severed transfers had reached Miriam’s credit cards.
Elena’s investigator reported that two of her favorite boutiques had declined charges. The private chauffeur service had placed her account on hold. The spa membership she treated like a second home had frozen her privileges pending updated payment information.
Garrick’s business accounts, which had relied on the monthly influx from my company, began to show strain within the week. He had used those funds not only for Miriam’s lifestyle but to paper over shortfalls in his own ventures. Without the quiet subsidy, the gaps became visible.
I received another email, longer this time, filled with accusations and thinly veiled threats. He claimed I was destabilizing the family. He claimed I was acting out of spite. He claimed the house had always been understood as theirs.
I did not respond.
Instead I authorized Elena to file the formal petition for exclusive possession of the property and to begin the process of removing them from the premises if they did not leave voluntarily. The law was unambiguous. Sentiment was not a form of ownership.
That night I stood at the window of my apartment and looked out at the city. Somewhere across town, in the mansion I had paid for, Miriam was discovering what it felt like to have every automatic luxury suddenly questioned. Garrick was learning that the wife he had dismissed as dependent had been the foundation under his feet all along.
