Chapter 7: The Truth Surfaces

Elena scheduled a formal meeting at her office for both parties. Garrick arrived with his attorney. Miriam insisted on attending as well. I sat on one side of the long conference table with Elena. They sat on the other.
Elena did not waste time.
She placed the trust documents, the purchase records, and the complete history of the monthly transfers on the table. She walked them through every page with the calm precision of someone who had already won. When she finished, the silence in the room was heavier than the one that had followed the slap.
Garrick’s face had gone pale. Miriam’s mouth opened and closed once without sound.
“This is impossible,” she said finally. “My son built that house. Everyone knows it.”
“Your son lived in that house,” Elena corrected. “My client paid for it. Every permit, every contractor, every piece of marble. The title has never been in his name.”
Garrick turned to me. For the first time since the foyer, he looked truly lost.
“Why?” he asked. “Why would you let us believe—”
“Because I thought kindness would eventually be met with kindness,” I said. “I was wrong. You and your mother taught me that.”
Miriam stood so quickly her chair scraped against the floor. “You deceitful little—”
“Sit down,” Elena said, voice like ice. “Or this meeting ends and we proceed directly to the eviction filing.”

Miriam sat.
I watched the two of them across the table and felt the last thread of old loyalty finally snap. There was nothing left to salvage. Only the clean, necessary work of separation.
