Chapter 13: The Turning Point
The pressure on Evan and Denise continued to build.
Their family tried to negotiate a plea deal, but the prosecutors weren’t interested. The combination of the arson evidence, the pension fraud, and the domestic violence made them unwilling to offer anything lenient.
Then something unexpected happened.
Denise decided to cooperate.
She contacted the prosecutors and offered to testify against Evan in exchange for a reduced sentence. According to Margaret, she was willing to admit that Evan had planned the warehouse fire and that she had helped him try to destroy documents.
When I heard the news, I felt a strange mix of emotions.
On one hand, I was relieved. Denise’s testimony would make the case against Evan much stronger. On the other hand, I felt a bitter sense of irony. The same woman who had laughed while I sat outside in the rain was now trying to save herself by throwing her own brother under the bus.
Evan’s lawyer tried to fight back, but it was too late. The evidence was too strong.
One month later, Evan accepted a plea deal. He pled guilty to arson, insurance fraud, and embezzlement. In exchange, the domestic violence charge was dropped, and he received a reduced sentence of six years in federal prison.
Denise received eighteen months of probation and was required to pay restitution.
When Margaret called to tell me the news, I didn’t feel the victory I thought I would.
I just felt tired.
That evening, I sat on the floor of Elias’s nursery (even though he wasn’t born yet) and cried. Not because I felt sorry for Evan, but because I finally allowed myself to grieve the life I had once believed I would have.
I had wanted a family. I had wanted stability. I had wanted to believe that the man I married was a good person.
Instead, I got betrayal, violence, and a long legal battle.
But I also got something else.
I got my strength back.
