Chapter 15: What Remains

Five years later, Elias was starting kindergarten.

He was a bright, curious boy with a stubborn streak and a kind heart. He asked a lot of questions — about the world, about people, and sometimes about his father.

I answered him honestly, but gently. I told him that his father had made very bad choices and that was why he couldn’t be in our lives. I never spoke about Evan with hatred. I didn’t want Elias to grow up carrying that weight.

Bennett Clinical Supply had recovered and was now stronger than ever under Richard Hale’s leadership. I still held shares in the company, but I no longer involved myself in daily operations. Instead, I focused on my work at the hospital and raising my son.

Evan was released from prison after serving four years. He never tried to contact me. According to Margaret, he had moved to another state and was working a quiet job. I didn’t ask for details. I didn’t need them.

One quiet Sunday afternoon, I took Elias to the park. We sat on a bench eating ice cream while he told me about his new friends at school. As I watched him laugh and chase pigeons, I felt a deep sense of peace.

I had lost a lot.

My marriage. My trust. My sense of safety.

But I had also gained something far more valuable.

I had gained myself.

I was no longer the woman who stayed silent. I was no longer the woman who let people convince her she was crazy. I was no longer the woman who waited for someone else to save her.

I was Allison Bennett.

A doctor. A mother. And a woman who had survived the worst and come out stronger on the other side.

As Elias ran back to me with a big smile, I pulled him into a hug and kissed the top of his head.

Whatever came next, we would face it together.

And this time, I knew we would be okay.
