Chapter 9: The Breaking Point
Two days later, the police executed search warrants on Evan and Denise’s house and on the main warehouse.
I wasn’t allowed to be present, but Detective Reyes kept me updated throughout the day.
They found more gasoline containers at the house, along with several hard drives that had been partially damaged. At the warehouse, they discovered that someone had tried to destroy boxes of financial records before the fire. Several documents had been partially burned, but enough remained to be useful.
Most importantly, they found evidence linking Evan to multiple shell companies used to move money out of the pension fund.
When Reyes called me that evening, her voice was tired but satisfied.
“We have enough to charge both of them,” she said. “Arson, insurance fraud, and embezzlement. The briefcase your sister-in-law was holding contained several key documents. It survived just well enough for us to use.”
I closed my eyes.
It was finally happening.
After months of fear and silence, the truth was coming out.
That night, I received another message from an unknown number.
Unknown: You think you’ve won? This isn’t over.
I stared at the message.
Then, instead of forwarding it like before, I replied.
Me: You’re right. It’s not over. But you’re the one who’s running out of time.
I blocked the number immediately after.
