Chapter 4: Collecting the Pieces

I became careful.
I bought a small digital voice recorder and kept it in my coat pocket. I took photos of every bruise with my phone and saved them in a hidden folder. I started saving every threatening text and voicemail Evan sent me.
But the most important thing I did was install hidden cameras.
I placed one in the living room and another in my father’s old study at the company. I also set up alerts on the company’s financial accounts so I would be notified whenever large transfers were made.
I didn’t tell anyone what I was doing. Not even my father. I was too afraid that if Evan found out, things would get much worse.
At the same time, I began quietly moving things.
I transferred the most valuable medical equipment from the main warehouse to a smaller, lesser-known location under a different company name I controlled. I changed the passwords to all the important accounts. I had my attorney draft documents that would automatically transfer full control of the company to a trusted employee if anything happened to me.
I was preparing for war.
Even though I didn’t know when it would come.
The only person who knew what I was doing was my attorney, Margaret Hale. She was the one who helped me set up the protected trust and the legal safeguards. She also helped me understand something important:
I didn’t just have to survive Evan.

I had to be ready to destroy him if necessary.
Because if I didn’t, he would eventually destroy me.
