Chapter 14: The Final Reckoning
Victoria’s final reckoning came during the sentencing hearing.
She stood in the defendant’s box in a plain prison uniform, no pearls, no tailored suit. The mask she had worn for decades was gone. Her hands trembled slightly as the judge read the sentence.
“Life imprisonment without parole for attempted murder of a child, aggravated assault, and domestic violence.”
The courtroom was silent.
Victoria looked at Elena across the room.
For the first time, there was no calculation in her eyes. Only regret.
“I thought I was protecting the family,” she said quietly.
Elena stood up, holding Leo in her arms.
“You destroyed it the moment you tried to kill my son,” she replied. “I will never forgive you. But I will never let you define me again.”
Victoria was led away in handcuffs.
No dramatic goodbye.
No tears from her.
Just the final click of the door closing behind the monster who had raised her.
Marcus sat in the back row, head bowed. He had chosen his wife and son. The family he had grown up in was gone.
Elena walked out of the courtroom with her father on one side and her son in her arms.
The final reckoning was not satisfying.
