Chapter 8: The Soldier’s Stand
Thomas Brand took the stand on the last day of the trial.
He wore his old uniform.
The courtroom was packed.
Thomas looked at his daughter, then at Gero, then at the judge.
“I am Oberstleutnant Thomas Brand,” he said. “I served thirty years in the Bundeswehr. I taught my daughter to be strong. I taught her to stand up for what is right. I failed her when I did not see what was happening in her marriage.”
His voice was steady but heavy.
“I saw the video. I saw my daughter curled on the floor protecting her unborn child while her husband beat her fifty times with a belt. I saw a man who believes violence is discipline. I saw a coward.”
Gero’s lawyer objected.
The judge overruled.
Thomas continued.
“I am here to tell you that my daughter is the strongest person I know. She survived. She protected her child. She spoke the truth when it would have been easier to stay silent. She deserves justice.”
He looked directly at Gero.
“And you deserve to pay for what you did to her.”
The courtroom was silent.
Thomas stepped down.
He walked to his daughter and hugged her in front of everyone.
