Chapter 12: The Fall

Adrian Vaughn’s downfall was faster and more brutal than anyone expected.

Within forty-eight hours of his confrontation with Ethan, the first major article broke. It wasn’t a full exposé yet, but it was enough. A respected medical journalist published a piece titled “Questions Surround Award-Winning Surgeon Dr. Adrian Vaughn Amid Allegations of Misconduct.” It mentioned the sudden departure of two nurses from his team, rumors of a volatile temper, and “concerns from former colleagues” who had chosen to remain anonymous for now.

The article spread like wildfire.

By the end of the week, the hospital where Adrian worked launched an internal review. Several patients and staff members who had previously stayed silent began coming forward. A former girlfriend contacted the journalist and shared text messages in which Adrian had threatened her after she tried to leave him.

His reputation, once spotless, began to crack.

Adrian tried to fight back. He held a press conference claiming the allegations were “baseless attacks” orchestrated by a jealous ex-fiancée and a powerful businessman with a personal vendetta. He looked polished and convincing on camera.

But the damage was already done.

At the Carter Foundation, Ethan watched the press conference from his office with Ava beside him. She sat quietly on the couch, her arms wrapped around herself as she listened to Adrian lie with practiced ease.

“He still thinks he can control the narrative,” she said softly.

Ethan turned off the television.

“He can’t anymore,” he replied. “Too many people are talking now. Once the truth starts coming out, it doesn’t stop.”

Ava looked at him.

“I’m scared,” she admitted. “He’s going to blame me for all of this. He’s going to say I destroyed him.”

Ethan walked over and sat beside her.

“Let him,” he said. “Because the truth is, he destroyed himself. You just stopped protecting him.”

Ava leaned her head against his shoulder. Ethan didn’t move away. Instead, he gently wrapped an arm around her, careful not to press against any of her bruises.

For the first time, she allowed herself to fully lean into him.

Downstairs, Adrian’s world continued to collapse.

The hospital suspended him pending the investigation. His medical license was under review. Several high-profile donors who had once supported his work quietly withdrew their backing. The award he had proudly accepted at the gala was now being called into question.

And through it all, Ava stayed in Ethan’s penthouse — safe, protected, and finally beginning to believe that she might actually be free.
