Chapter 2: The Mask

Ava took three deep breaths before she left the dressing room.
She smoothed down the front of her black blouse, checked her reflection one last time, and forced her expression into something calm and professional. No one downstairs could know what had just happened. Especially not Adrian.
She stepped into the elevator and descended to the ballroom level.
The moment the doors opened, the noise hit her — laughter, clinking glasses, soft classical music, and the low hum of powerful conversations. The Carter Foundation’s annual gala was one of the most exclusive events in the city. Everyone who mattered was here tonight.
Ava spotted Adrian immediately.
He stood near the stage in a perfectly tailored tuxedo, laughing with a group of surgeons and donors. When he saw her, his smile widened. He excused himself and walked toward her with that confident, charming stride that had once fooled everyone — including her.
“There you are,” Adrian said, leaning in to kiss her cheek. His hand settled on her waist, right over one of the bruises. Ava fought not to flinch. “I was starting to worry.”
“I had to change,” she said quietly. “There was a small accident with my blouse.”
Adrian’s eyes flicked over her, searching. For a second, something cold passed through his gaze.
“Be careful,” he murmured. “You know how important tonight is. For both of us.”
Ava nodded.
She felt Ethan before she saw him.
He was standing near the bar, speaking with Senator Collins, but his eyes were on her. The moment their gazes met, something passed between them — a silent understanding. He gave her the smallest nod, then returned his attention to the senator.
Adrian followed her line of sight and frowned.
“Carter’s been staring at you a lot lately,” he said, voice low. “Should I be concerned?”
Ava forced a small smile.
“He’s my boss. He stares at everyone when he’s thinking.”
Adrian didn’t look convinced, but he let it go.
The next twenty minutes passed in a blur of forced smiles and careful conversations. Ava stayed close to Adrian like she always did at these events, playing the role of the supportive fiancée. But every time he touched her, she felt Ethan’s eyes on them.
When it was finally time for Ethan’s speech, the entire ballroom fell quiet.
He walked onto the stage with the same calm authority he carried everywhere. The lights caught the sharp lines of his face as he adjusted the microphone.
Ava stood near the side of the stage, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.
Ethan’s speech was flawless, as always. He spoke about the importance of pediatric care, about the children who needed help, about the responsibility of those who had power to use it for good. The audience was captivated.
But Ava noticed the way his eyes occasionally found hers in the crowd.
When he finished, the applause was thunderous.
Then the host stepped forward with a bright smile.
“And now,” he announced, “it is our great honor to recognize one of the city’s most dedicated medical professionals. A man whose skill and compassion have saved countless young lives. Please welcome Dr. Adrian Vaughn!”
The applause rose again.
Ava felt her stomach twist.
Adrian squeezed her hand once before walking onto the stage. He accepted the award with practiced humility, giving a short, moving speech about his commitment to children’s health. The audience ate it up. Cameras flashed. People wiped their eyes.
Ava stood frozen in place, watching the man who had left bruises on her body accept praise for being a hero.
When Adrian finished, he walked back toward her. He slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her close for the cameras.
“Smile,” he whispered against her ear. “Everyone’s watching.”
Ava smiled.

But across the room, Ethan Carter was watching too.
And for the first time, he wasn’t looking away.
