Chapter 4: The Speech

Ethan stood at the podium under the bright stage lights, looking out at a sea of powerful faces. Senators, CEOs, surgeons, and wealthy donors filled the grand ballroom of Carter Tower. The Carter Foundation’s annual gala was in full swing, and everyone expected him to deliver the same polished, inspiring speech he gave every year.

But tonight, his mind was elsewhere.

He could still see the bruises on Ava’s skin. The fingerprints on her arm. The way she had tried to hide them. The fear in her eyes when she realized he knew.

He forced himself to focus.

“Tonight,” Ethan began, his voice steady and commanding, “we gather not just to celebrate generosity, but to honor those who dedicate their lives to protecting the most vulnerable among us — our children.”

The audience listened intently. Cameras flashed. People nodded along.

Ethan continued speaking about the importance of pediatric care and the new multimillion-dollar expansion his foundation was funding for Children’s Heart Hospital. His words were perfect. His delivery was flawless.

But his eyes kept drifting.

He found Ava in the crowd.

She stood near the side of the stage, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Adrian Vaughn stood beside her, one arm possessively around her waist. Even from a distance, Ethan could see the tension in Ava’s body.

Adrian leaned down and whispered something in her ear. Ava smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

Ethan’s grip on the podium tightened.

He finished his speech to thunderous applause. As he stepped down from the stage, his eyes met Ava’s for a brief second. She gave him the smallest nod — a silent thank you for keeping his word and not causing a scene.

Then the host’s voice boomed across the ballroom.

“And now, it is our great privilege to honor one of the city’s most dedicated and skilled medical professionals. A man whose expertise has saved countless young lives. Please welcome Dr. Adrian Vaughn!”

The applause rose again.

Ethan watched as Adrian walked onto the stage, smiling and waving like a man who truly believed he deserved the honor. He accepted the crystal award with practiced humility and launched into a moving speech about his commitment to children’s health.

The audience was captivated.

Ethan wasn’t.

He studied Adrian carefully — the way he spoke, the way he moved, the charming smile that never quite reached his eyes. This was the man who had put his hands on Ava. This was the man who had left bruises on her body and still had the audacity to stand on stage and accept praise for being a hero.

Ethan’s jaw clenched.

When Adrian finished speaking, he returned to Ava’s side. He slipped an arm around her waist again and pulled her close for the cameras. Ava smiled on cue, but Ethan saw the way her shoulders tensed.

He couldn’t look away.

For eleven months, he had respected Ava’s relationship. He had kept his distance. He had told himself that her personal life was none of his business.

But that was before he saw the truth.

Now, everything had changed.

Ethan Carter was no longer willing to stand by and do nothing.
