Chapter 14: The Truth

Three weeks after the gala, the full truth came out.
A major investigative piece was published, detailing years of alleged abuse, manipulation, and professional misconduct by Dr. Adrian Vaughn. Multiple women came forward — former girlfriends, nurses, and even a former patient’s family member. The evidence was overwhelming.
Text messages. Voicemails. Medical records that had been quietly buried. Witness statements.
Adrian’s carefully constructed image shattered overnight.
The hospital fired him. His medical license was suspended indefinitely. Several of his high-profile patients publicly distanced themselves from him. The award he had received at the Carter Foundation gala was quietly revoked.
Adrian tried to disappear.
He stopped answering calls. He moved out of his apartment. But Ethan’s team kept track of him. They made sure Ava was protected at all times.
One afternoon, Ava received a message from Adrian.
It was short.
You destroyed me. I hope you’re happy.
Ava stared at the message for a long time.
Then she showed it to Ethan.
He read it, then looked at her.
“What do you want to do?” he asked.
Ava took a deep breath.
“I want to reply,” she said. “Just once.”
She typed slowly.
I didn’t destroy you, Adrian. I just stopped letting you destroy me.
She hit send.
Then she blocked his number.
For the first time since she had met Adrian Vaughn, Ava felt like she had finally taken her power back.
That evening, she stood on the balcony of Ethan’s penthouse, looking out at the city. Ethan came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
“It’s really over,” she whispered.
Ethan rested his chin on her shoulder.
“It is,” he said. “And you’re still here. You survived him.”
Ava turned in his arms and looked up at him.
“I couldn’t have done it without you.”
May you like
Ethan smiled softly — the rare, genuine smile he only showed when they were alone.
“You could have,” he said. “But I’m glad you didn’t have to.”
