Chapter 10: The Thinning

The calls did not stop all at once. They simply lost density.

By the middle of the second month a message arrived only every few days, then every week. The content grew shorter and more ritualized—my mother hoping I was “still open to talking someday,” my father noting that the accounts had been “restructured on their end,” Caleb sending a single line that he hoped marriage was “worth it.” None of the messages asked about the wedding itself. None acknowledged the two-hour drive that had been too far after a ten-state flight. The gravitational center remained the same: they had lost convenient access to my resources and had not yet found a language for the relationship that could survive without that access.
