Chapter 4: The Volume text

By noon on the twenty-fifth day the call count had climbed past four hundred. Voicemails stacked in the same rising pitch of disbelief. My father repeated the bank’s language as if the words themselves were an attack. My mother moved from accusation to injured bewilderment and back again. Caleb’s messages lost the casual tone he had used for the thumbs-up emoji the night before the wedding and became short, demanding sentences about “fixing this before it gets worse.”

I listened to three of the voicemails all the way through, then stopped. The content never changed. No one asked how the wedding had felt with their seats empty. No one referenced the two-hour drive they could not manage. Every message orbited the same sudden inconvenience: my name was no longer attached to money they had grown used to treating as jointly available.
