Chapter 11: The Permanent Record

I left the archived thread untouched and the phone notifications permanently muted for that group of numbers. Andrew and I updated the last of the practical details—emergency contacts, beneficiary designations, the ordinary paperwork of a household that no longer listed my childhood address as a backup. Each change was small. Together they formed a clean perimeter. No drama attached to any of them. The bank statements continued to reflect exactly what I had arranged on the twenty-fourth day: my contributions gone from the joint structures, theirs undisturbed. No one from the family attempted a formal dispute. There was nothing to dispute that the signatures and dates did not already answer.
