Chapter 5: The Boundary Held

Andrew and I kept the phone face-down on the kitchen counter and went about the day we had already planned. I answered nothing. When the vibration became constant I switched the device to permanent silent and placed it in a drawer. The absence of response produced a new wave of messages that tried different angles—concern for my mental state, reminders of everything the family had “done for me,” warnings that I was being influenced by Andrew’s side. I read enough of them later that evening to recognize the pattern, then archived the thread without reply.

The bank statements remained exactly as I had left them. My contributions were gone from the joint structures. Their contributions remained. The paper trail required no defense. It only required that I refuse to restore the previous arrangement for the sake of their comfort.
