Chapter 13: The Years Without the Ranking

The years that followed did not reopen the argument. They simply rendered it unnecessary.
Holidays arranged themselves around the household Andrew and I built. Birthdays arrived without the old undercurrent of obligation or disappointment. Information about my family reached me the way news from distant acquaintances reaches anyone—occasionally, without urgency, and without the expectation of response. Caleb’s children grew in the photographs that sometimes surfaced through mutual connections. I wished them well in the abstract and felt no pull to reenter the hierarchy that had ranked their gender reveal above my wedding. The ranking had been shown clearly enough. I had stopped petitioning for a different order.
