Chapter 10: The Woman Who Finally Chose Herself

On the morning of what would have been our tenth anniversary, I woke up in my new apartment and made myself breakfast.

I didn’t feel sad.

I didn’t feel angry.

I felt… light.

I had spent ten years trying to be the wife Mark wanted. I had planned trips, hosted dinners, and swallowed my own needs so he wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. I had believed that if I was patient enough and loving enough, he would eventually see me clearly.

But he never did.

And when the moment came for him to choose, he chose his past over our future.

I didn’t hate him for that.

I simply refused to keep choosing someone who had already chosen someone else.

That afternoon, I received a final message from Mark. This one came through his lawyer.

It was short.

Mark: I hope you’re happy now.

I stared at the message for a long time.

Then I replied with three words:

Claire: I will be.

I put my phone down and walked out onto the small balcony of my apartment. The sun was warm on my face. For the first time in years, I wasn’t waiting for someone else to decide what my life should look like.

May you like

I was deciding for myself.

And that, more than any house or any marriage, was the freedom I had been looking for all along.
