Chapter 12: The Man Who Couldn’t Let Go
Mark continued to struggle.
His company had placed him on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ethics investigation. Several clients had pulled their accounts after hearing about the scandal. His reputation in the industry, which he had always guarded so carefully, was damaged beyond repair.
He tried reaching out to me through mutual friends. He asked them to talk to me on his behalf. Most of them refused. Those who did contact me quickly realized I had no interest in reconciling.
One evening, I received a long email from him. It was different from the others. This one wasn’t angry or desperate. It was reflective.
He wrote about how he had taken me for granted. He admitted that he had grown comfortable with the life I had built and had stopped putting in effort. He even acknowledged that he had used Lily as an excuse to avoid dealing with problems in our marriage.
I read the entire email.
Then I closed my laptop without replying.
Some apologies come too late.
And some relationships end not because of one big betrayal, but because of years of small dismissals that eventually become impossible to ignore.
Mark had made his choice on that cruise.
