Chapter 6: The Man Who Couldn’t Accept Defeat

Mark didn’t stop trying to reach me.
After I blocked his number, he started calling from other phones — his office line, his sister’s phone, even a number I didn’t recognize. I let every call go to voicemail. I wasn’t interested in hearing his explanations or his anger.
By the third day, he began showing up at places he thought I might be. He went to my old office building. He drove past the hotel where I was staying. He even showed up at the café I used to frequent near our old neighborhood.
I wasn’t there.
I had already moved most of my important belongings into a small but comfortable apartment I had quietly rented two weeks earlier — just in case. I had been preparing longer than Mark realized.
On the fourth day, he sent a long email.
It was full of accusations and self-pity.
He said I was being cruel. He said I was punishing him for wanting to spend time with his daughter. He said I was destroying our marriage over “one weekend.” He even claimed that I had always been jealous of Vanessa and that this was my way of getting back at her.
I read the entire email once.
Then I forwarded it to my lawyer with a single note:
“Please add this to the file. It shows a pattern of emotional manipulation and refusal to take responsibility.”
Priya replied within minutes.
“Understood. We’ll use it.”
That evening, Mark left a voicemail that was different from the others. His voice was lower, almost pleading.
“Claire… please. Just talk to me. We can work this out. Lily is asking about you. She doesn’t understand why you’re doing this.”
I deleted the message without listening to the rest.
He still didn’t understand.
This wasn’t about Lily.

This was about the fact that he had looked me in the eye and told me my feelings didn’t matter. That our marriage didn’t matter. That his ex-wife and his daughter’s comfort were more important than the woman he had promised to spend his life with.
And now he was surprised that I had walked away.
