Chapter 4: The Morning He Came Home Early

Mark left for work at his usual time the next morning. He kissed my cheek like nothing had happened. I let him.

The moment his car pulled out of the driveway, I began making calls.

First, I contacted the moving company I had used when I bought the house years ago. I scheduled them to come on Monday afternoon.

Then I called the security company and had the locks scheduled for a change on Monday morning.

After that, I packed.

I didn’t take everything. I didn’t want to be dramatic. I took my clothes, my important documents, my jewelry, my laptop, and the few sentimental items that actually mattered to me. I left the furniture, the kitchenware, and most of the household items. Mark could keep the shell of the life we had built. I was taking the parts that were actually mine.

By the time he came home that evening, two large suitcases and several boxes were already by the front door.

He stopped in the hallway when he saw them.

“What is this?” he asked.

I was sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of tea.

“I’m moving out,” I said calmly.

Mark laughed once, like I had told a joke.

“Claire, stop being ridiculous. We had one conversation. You’re overreacting.”

I slid the folder across the counter toward him.

“These are the divorce papers. I filed this morning. Your cruise documents are also in there, along with the confirmation that I canceled our anniversary trip.”

He stared at the folder like it might explode.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’ve never been more serious.”

Mark picked up the papers with shaking hands. He flipped through them quickly, then looked up at me with genuine shock.

“You’re actually doing this? Over a cruise?”

I stood up and looked him in the eye.

“No,” I said. “I’m doing this because you looked me in the face and told me your ex-wife and your daughter matter more than our marriage. And because you believed I would accept it without a fight.”

I picked up my purse.

“The movers will be here on Monday. I suggest you start packing your things too.”

Mark’s face had gone completely pale.

“Claire, wait—”

I walked past him toward the front door.

He followed me.

“You’re making a mistake,” he said, his voice rising. “You’re throwing away ten years because of one weekend.”

I stopped at the door and turned around.

May you like

“No, Mark. I’m finally choosing myself after ten years of choosing you.”

Then I walked out and closed the door behind me.
