Chapter 10: Longer Measures
By the second month the protective and financial measures had moved from emergency posture into sustained structure.
The assault record remained closed and complete: the kitchen footage, the injury documentation, the family’s own statements under the pantry camera. Protective restrictions kept Daniel, Margaret, Vanessa, and Daniel’s father from the residence and from any unsupervised approach. Attempts to reopen contact through intermediaries were logged and declined. No informal path was granted.
The financial review of discretionary accounts and related-party arrangements connected to Daniel Cole and Cole Hospitality reached its first formal summary. Several movements that had relied on informal authority were isolated and placed under recovery or regularization. Operating control of the hospitality subsidiaries remained with the holding structure. Daniel’s personal liquidity stayed constrained. Credit that had once moved on name and relationship now required documentation he could no longer supply on the previous terms.
Evelyn handled the limited formal responses required by opposing counsel. Requests for mediation, for mutual public statements, and for a narrowing of the freezes were answered with the same position: the second-morning record stood; ownership stood; any residual discussion of personal arrangements would wait until the formal processes concluded without interference. Interference would only extend the timeline.

I continued to occupy the residence under the protocol. Staff reporting lines remained revised. The cameras continued ordinary function under clear authorization. I did not perform presence as victory. Presence was simply the practical consequence of title and of the morning that had confirmed the necessity of the protocol.
Daniel’s communications, when they arrived through counsel, oscillated between formal acceptance of the freeze status and attempts to recharacterize the slap as a single loss of temper inside an otherwise viable marriage. The footage and the subsequent orders to know my place made the recharacterization unavailable. I authorized no reply beyond the procedural minimum.
