Chapter 2: The Performance Continues

They continued the performance for another seventeen minutes.

Vanessa sat at the island and listed the household tasks she expected me to absorb. Margaret spoke about the proper hierarchy of a married woman in their family. Daniel stood with his arms folded, watching to see whether the slap had produced the required submission. His father returned to the newspaper as if the matter had been settled.

I remained standing beside the counter where my wedding ring rested in a thin film of spilled coffee. The security camera above the pantry door continued its quiet, uninterrupted recording. Every word, every gesture, every assumption of ownership was being preserved under the protocol Evelyn had already activated.

My phone vibrated once with a secondary confirmation: discretionary accounts linked to Daniel Cole and Cole Hospitality flagged and locked pending review. Property management notified. On-site security detail rerouted to passive observation mode. I did not look at the screen long enough for anyone in the kitchen to notice.

Daniel mistook my silence for defeat.

“You’ll apologize to Vanessa,” he said. “Then you’ll clean the floor. Then we’ll discuss how you speak in this house.”

Margaret nodded. “Marriage requires adjustment. You will learn.”

I met her eyes without heat.

“I learn very quickly.”

Vanessa laughed and requested the pancakes again. No one moved to prepare them. The expectation had already been assigned to me. I left the ring where it was, walked past the marble island, and climbed the main staircase to the suite they had given us. Behind me, Margaret’s voice carried up the open landing: “She’ll come around. They always do.”

Inside the suite I locked the door, opened the encrypted channel, and reviewed the live status. Recordings from the kitchen cameras—mine, not theirs—were already mirrored to secure off-site storage. The freeze on discretionary transfers was active. Counsel had prepared the first formal notices. Evelyn’s message was brief: Timeline intact. Awaiting your next instruction.

I sent the reply.

Hold the notices for ninety minutes. Let them finish the morning performance. I want the complete record.
