Chapter 12: Settled Configuration

By the end of the fourth month the configuration had settled into durable form.

Protective orders covering the assault and restricting contact remained in force. Formal separation progressed toward final terms that reflected the ownership structures and the documented events of the second morning. Daniel retained no discretionary control over the residence or the hospitality entities. Residual personal claims were addressed through counsel under the same evidentiary baseline. No revision of the slap, the orders to clean the floor, or the assumption of camera ownership was accepted.

Margaret and Vanessa occupied whatever reduced position the family’s constrained circumstances allowed. I received no direct communication from them and authorized none. Their comfort with the previous hierarchy had ended the morning the banking alerts arrived and the recordings were confirmed under Vale Meridian authority. That ending did not require my ongoing attention.

I maintained the residence and the holding structure without public statement. The protocol had done what it was designed to do: preserve the record, freeze the discretionary channels, and remove the assumption that a wife who asked a sister-in-law to wash dishes could be struck into place without consequence. The consequence was now structural rather than provisional.

Evelyn prepared the remaining steps with the same precision she had applied from the eleven-second confirmation onward. No acceleration for convenience. No exceptions for remorse expressed after the leverage had already shifted. The second morning of the marriage had supplied the test. The marriage had failed it. The structures that followed simply enforced the result.

I did not retrieve the wedding ring from the evidence file.

Its status remained procedural.

The ground beneath the lakefront estate answered to the instruments that had always held it.

Those instruments remained mine.
