Chapter 12: The New Beginning

The new beginning began the Monday after the board meeting.

I walked into the Apex Global executive suite and asked for the complete financial history of the company.

By noon, I had restructured the leadership.

I promoted three women who had been overlooked for years.

I adjusted schedules so single parents could attend school events.

I made charitable giving public and measurable.

The press called it a “reinvention.” I called it correction.

In the quiet evenings, I sat in my Manhattan apartment and read the letters August Voss had left for me. He had watched me from a distance, respecting my mother’s wish for no contact, but he had never stopped caring.

The final letter was short.

You built a life without me. Now build one with what I left you. Do not be kind to those who were not kind to you. But do not become them.

I folded the letter and placed it in the drawer.

The new beginning was not loud.

It was steady.

It was mine.

I was no longer the quiet wife in the background.

I was the owner.

And I was going to make the company something better than the man who had tried to steal it.
