Chapter 4: Gavin’s Panic

Gavin’s panic came that afternoon.
He found me at the hotel.
He stood outside my room, eyes red, hair messy.
“Maeve, please. This is insane. We can fix this.”
I let him in.
He looked around the simple room and laughed bitterly.
“You left our penthouse for this?”
“I left a lie for the truth,” I said.
He tried to take my hands.
“I made a mistake. Valerie was just… convenient. The engagement was for the company image. I never stopped loving you.”
I pulled my hands away.
“You kissed her in front of the entire company while I stood there with flowers and tickets for a trip you never wanted to take with me.”
Gavin’s voice cracked.
“I was scared. The company was struggling. Valerie promised to fix it.”
I looked at him with pity.
“The company was struggling because you were a bad leader. I bought it to save it. And now I’m taking it back.”
Gavin fell to his knees.
“Please. Don’t do this. I’ll lose everything.”
I looked down at him.
“You already did.”
He left crying.
