Chapter 10: The Message That Changed Everything

That evening, I received a text from an unknown number.

Unknown: This is Vanessa. Please don’t block me. I just need to say something.

I stared at the message.

Part of me wanted to delete it without reading further.

But another part of me was curious.

I replied.

Marissa: Say what you need to say.

Three dots appeared, then disappeared, then appeared again.

Vanessa: I’m sorry. I know that doesn’t mean anything, but I am. I never meant for it to go this far. Caleb told me you didn’t care about him anymore. He said you were basically roommates. I believed him. I was stupid and selfish, and I ruined everything.

I read the message twice.

Then I typed back.

Marissa: You didn’t ruin my marriage, Vanessa. He did. You just helped.

She didn’t reply for a long time.

When she finally did, her message was shorter.

Vanessa: Derek filed for divorce this morning. I deserve it. I just wanted you to know that I’m not going to fight you on anything. If you want the house, take it. I won’t make it harder than it already is.

I stared at the screen.

For the first time, I felt something close to pity for her.

She had destroyed her own life too.

I didn’t reply.

Instead, I put the phone down and walked out to the backyard.

The pool was still. The key fob was still at the bottom.

I sat down on one of the lounge chairs and looked up at the sky.

Tomorrow, Caleb would be served with divorce papers.

The life I had known for twelve years was about to end officially.

And even though it hurt, I also felt something else.

Hope.

Because for the first time in a very long time, I was no longer waiting for someone else to decide my future.

I was choosing it for myself.
