Chapter 9: The First Real Step

The next morning, I met with Elena Vargas at her office.

She was sharp, professional, and didn’t waste time with sympathy. I appreciated that.

We went over everything — the affair, the pool incident, the financial situation, and the house. Elena took detailed notes and asked smart questions.

When I finished explaining everything, she leaned back in her chair.

“You have a strong case,” she said. “The fact that the affair happened in your home, combined with the public nature of the incident, works in your favor. We can push for a favorable settlement, especially regarding the house and assets.”

I nodded.

“I want to move quickly,” I said. “I don’t want this dragging on for months.”

Elena studied me.

“Most people in your situation want to punish their spouse,” she said. “You seem more focused on getting out cleanly. Why is that?”

I thought about it for a moment.

“Because I already punished him,” I said. “The entire neighborhood saw what he did. His reputation is destroyed. His affair partner’s marriage is over. And he knows I’m not going to take him back.”

I met her eyes.

“I don’t need to destroy him further. I just need to protect myself and move on.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“That’s the healthiest answer I’ve heard in a long time,” she said. “Most clients want blood. You just want freedom.”

She closed her folder.

“I’ll start drafting the paperwork today. We should be able to serve him by the end of the week.”

I stood up and shook her hand.

“Thank you.”

As I walked out of her office, I felt something shift inside me.

For the first time since I caught them, I felt like I was in control again.

Not of Caleb.

May you like

But of my own future.

And that was more powerful than any revenge I could have planned.
