Chapter 4: The Neighborhood That Saw Everything

The patrol car arrived first.

Two officers stepped out and walked toward the backyard. One of them was Officer Ramirez, a woman I had spoken to once when I installed the security system. She took one look at the scene — Caleb naked by the pool, Vanessa still in the water, and me holding their clothes — and her expression shifted into professional calm.

“Ma’am,” she said to me, “we received an emergency alert from this address. Is everything all right?”

I nodded toward the pool.

“My husband was having sex with our neighbor in my pool,” I said clearly. “I pressed the alarm because I wanted documentation.”

Officer Ramirez looked at Caleb, then at Vanessa, then back at me.

She didn’t laugh. She didn’t look surprised. She simply nodded and started taking notes.

Caleb tried to speak.

“This is a private matter,” he said. “There’s no need for all this.”

Officer Ramirez raised an eyebrow.

“Sir, you’re standing naked in someone else’s backyard after an emergency alarm was triggered. I’d say this has moved beyond private.”

Vanessa’s husband, Derek, appeared at the side gate a moment later.

He took one look at his wife in our pool and went completely still.

“Vanessa,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “What the hell is going on?”

Vanessa started crying.

Derek turned to Caleb.

“You son of a bitch.”

Caleb held up both hands.

“Derek, listen—”

Derek didn’t listen.

He lunged forward, but Officer Ramirez stepped between them quickly.

“Sir, I need you to calm down,” she said firmly.

The second officer was already speaking into his radio, requesting backup.

I stood there holding their clothes and watched as the entire situation spiraled out of Caleb’s control.

Neighbors were openly watching now. Some had come out onto their lawns. Others were recording on their phones. The story was already spreading through the Ridge Hollow community app.

I didn’t feel sorry for him.

I felt something close to satisfaction.

Because Caleb had spent months lying to me.

Now the whole neighborhood knew exactly who he was.
