Chapter 12: The Negotiation Table

Two weeks later, we sat across from each other in Elena’s conference room for the first settlement meeting.
Caleb looked exhausted. His lawyer, a sharp man named Thomas Reed, did most of the talking. Caleb barely made eye contact with me.
Thomas started by offering what he called a “reasonable and generous” proposal. Caleb would keep the house if I agreed to a smaller financial settlement. He also wanted to avoid any further public discussion of the affair.
Elena didn’t even blink.
She calmly laid out our counteroffer.
Marissa would keep the house. Caleb would receive a smaller portion of the joint assets. And because of the affair and the public nature of the incident, we were requesting a larger alimony payment and full reimbursement for the value of the pool and backyard renovations that Marissa had paid for.
Thomas tried to push back, but Elena was prepared. She had documentation of every major expense, along with the police report from the day of the alarm.
By the end of the meeting, Thomas looked frustrated, and Caleb looked defeated.
After they left, Elena turned to me.
“He’s not going to fight as hard as I expected,” she said. “The public embarrassment is working in our favor. Most men in his position would rather settle quietly than risk more people finding out the details.”
I nodded slowly.
“I don’t want to drag this out either,” I said. “I just want what’s fair.”
Elena studied me.
“You’re being very reasonable,” she said. “Most clients in your situation want to punish their spouse as much as possible. You seem more focused on moving forward.”
I looked out the window.
“I already punished him,” I said quietly. “The whole neighborhood saw what he did. His reputation is ruined. His affair partner’s marriage is over. And he knows I’m never taking him back.”
I met her eyes.
“Now I just want to be free.”
May you like
Elena smiled faintly.
“Then let’s get you free.”
